Day 1: Yes, it's THAT bad

I'm trying to type but I'm still having violent flashbacks from this morning when I drank my first protein shake (Bariatric Advantage-Vanilla).  It was traumatizingly, gag-inducing terrible.  Imagine what it might taste like if you were to mix a bottle of water with all of the collected chalk dust from that little metal tray at the bottom of the chalkboard that holds the erasers, plus a few drops of vanilla extract and two tablespoons of bulldog semen.  Come on, how hungry are you right now?

Dramatically grotesque descriptions aside, I'm happy to be in pre-op mode.  Now if you'll excuse me, I need to sift through my satchel of vitamins and try to figure out what I'm supposed to be taking.

  1. Oh, pre-op diets are no fun. Been there, suffered through that. I can't say it gets better, but I can say it ends eventually! Hugs to you!

  2. The Unjury shakes taste so much better than BA--but the pre-op plan is slightly different. Try some of the SF Torani Syrups. I used caramel syrup in my vanilla shake this morning for an awesome experience! Of course, the Unjury shakes taste good alone. Good luck! I know it's hard, but it will so totally be worth it. And if you didn't do it already, mixing the shake with skim or soy milk helps the flavor and adds more protien.

    1. I'm not allowed skim mill until week two post-op, and I can't wait! I just went to GNC and got a highly recommended kind that they sell...the BA kind actually made me sick to my stomach :(

  3. I'm sorry your shake was so horrible. You have to hunt around for a kind you like. The GNC house brand is not horrible. If you have a Whole Foods in your neighborhood, they have a bunch of different kinds where you can buy just a single-serving packet to try it out.

    1. Good call on the single-serve packets @ Whole Foods...I will definitely try that! There's one right down the street. Love that place :)

  4. Monica... I just found your blog and I'm so happy I did. I am just a few steps behind you in my own LapBand journey - I hope to have the surgery in early June- and it means so much to me to read your thoughts, experiences, etc. I am sending you the best and I hope your surgery/recovery goes wonderfully well. I will look forward to each and every one of your posts! Best of luck!

  5. Thanks Julie!! So where are you in the process? Are you going through insurance and have to meet a bunch of criteria before being approved?

    1. Exactly. My insurance requires that I have six months of doctors visits. And monthly appointments with a nurse coach on the phone. I have to say, my doctor has been amazing. He is fully supportive of the whole process. The monthly phone appointments, though, have been sort of a drag. The nurse never calls me at the designated time, and I kind of have to hunt her down and make her talk to me. Ha! I'm a public school teacher, so I'm hoping to be approved and have the surgery in early June. Fingers crossed.

Your big day is tomorrow! I know you are so excited. And probably a little bit nervous too. It's going to be awesome. I can't wait to hear all about it.

    2. It's actually Friday...I have one more day of clear liquids and then surgery at 9:30am on Friday morning. And YES I am excited. It's been hard to get through these last few days at work because I can't really focus on anything else :)

My doctor has been really supportive too--she's actually the one who suggested it. I hadn't even considered it before then. This was late-November 2012...so it's been a relatively quick process!

The phone appointments sound rather irritating! I have my fingers crossed that all goes well and you get to do your surgery at the beginning of the summer. That would be ideal! But sometimes insurance companies just don't care what we want...sigh
